Why study Russian
Russian people may be charming, irritating, open-hearted or odd, but undoubtedly they have the great language that is really worth learning.
Russian is the native language of about 150 million citizens of the Russian Federation. Another 150 million people speak Russian – the citizens of former Soviet Republics and the Russian migrants all over the world. It is one of the five official languages of the UN, and ranks with English, Chinese, Hindi, Urdu, and Spanish as a major world language.
The tie of language to culture leads us to a strong reason for learning Russian. Literature, philosophy, arts, music – in all these fields Russia has made a considerable contribution. If you want to understand the Russians better, read Dostoevsky in his native language – and you will be captured.
Besides, Russian is a major language for scientific publication and the most used language on the Internet. The world’s newest “Silicon Valley” is Skolkovo, a center for the development of nanotechnology, artificial intelligence, and much more. In multiple fields of engineering, including aerospace, Russia remains a major driving force.
Russia still exerts considerable political and economic influence around the world, and there will always be a demand for specialists in Russian affairs. Companies, businesses and consulting firms who have Russian partners expand almost daily and they all need employees with knowledge of the Russian language. If you are already doing business with Russia and are going on a business trip, you should be prepared to communicate with your Russian partners.
On the other hand, within Russia itself there are multiple opportunities for those who know Russian: for entrepreneurs, journalists, students, to say nothing about EFL teachers. The Russians have a great appetite for learning English, and native English speakers can easily find teaching job there.
Travelling is one more reason to learn Russian. Russia is a fascinating and exotic country with amazing cities, diverse wildlife and unexplored places. There is so much to see and do in Russia, and speaking a little Russian will help you to make the most of every moment.
You might already have your own good reasons for learning Russian.
Whatever they are, you will never be disappointed with the advantages that this language will give to you!
